stereotypes
Wednesday, 28 September 2016

Ever wonder why stereotypes is a thing? I mean, it can be convenient to classify someone under a particular stereotype - this way, when you introduce him/her to another friend of yours, you can get away with saying, "Oh, she's the typical blonde." and your friend would totally get you.

But what happens if you don't fit into a particular stereotype? How will people classify you then? Will they dump you in the "others" category, or the "misfits"?

That, my friends, is the story of my life.

There are a few usual stereotypes:

  1. The cheerleader / blonde / white girl
  2. The jock / jerk
  3. The ah lian / ah beng
  4. The nerd / mugger
  5. The geek / weeaboo
* list is not exhaustive

As everyone perceives, numbers 1 and 2 are the most popular in school. #1 would have at least a thousand followers on Instagram with their perfect feed, sipping their Pumpkin Spice Lattes (or the equivalent in SG) with a Macbook by their side while having their Adidas Originals shoes on. #2 would have a lot of friends both girls and guys, all of them almost as good looking because bird of the same feather flock together, right?

I can go on describing the rest, but it's unnecessary. You may even have a mental image conjured when you read the above stereotypes! Don't worry - it's all in us.

But me being me, I don't seem to fit into any stereotypes fully and wholly which brings me to my next question - then who the heck do I mix with? Usually stereotypes tend to stick together and form, well, a clique. What happens then if you don't fit into any?

The answer is simple: You make friends with all, but only remain close friends with those who make an effort to understand your quirky little qualities and appreciate you for it. I'm sure most of my readers would know almost exactly who I am - I love to read (nerd), write (nerd), watch anime and korean variety shows (weaboo, geek), still in love with HSM and all things 90s and 2000s (childish???????), love my macbook and wanting to get an iPhone although the headphone jack is gone (the white girl) and the list goes on.

There isn't any bottomline to this post - sorry if you're looking for that particular line of wisdom to sum up my entire word vomit of a post. I just want to thank all my friends who have stuck with me through secondary school, JC and (now) university and have tolerated me throughout despite me being very very imperfect and ridiculous in public. I love each and every one of you and I just want to let you know that you have a special place in my heart :-)

Okay maybe it was a bit too soppy in the end because the post took an unexpected turn lol. Back to ntulearn :-)
