ideals: a standard or principal to be aimed at

We all have ideals. Who you want to be, what you want to do, when you want to be accomplished and successful, where you want to go, and how you want to look.

But are all ideals... ideal?

Sometimes our ideals can be skewed. It can be flawed. It can be an ugly concoction of what you really want to achieve and society's take. But then again, it can act as something to really spur you on and be your daily source of motivation. It goes two ways. It's a double-edged sword.

I'm not here to talk to you about how your ideals should be - because that is purely up to you. You are your own person, after all. It's just that sometimes people struggle with hitting those ideals and they end up upset and depressed, and it spirals down continuously until they feel like they're choking on air and gasping for breath because there is simply no way for them to achieve that unattainable ideal that they've always wanted. It's the ugly side of ideals.

We shouldn't be suffering under the hand of our ideals, am I right? After all, we are the ones who crafted our ideals so carefully and intricately to tailor to our tastes. Instead, we should be gaining the upper hand in this battle and work towards this goal that we have always wanted.

Of course, then there comes the issue of how detailed should our ideals be? The more detailed it is, the harder it is for it to come true. Sometimes it seems like you want to add numerous little bulleted points under each big ideal, because that is what you really, really want. But each growing number on that list is almost basically the scale of how much stress and pressure you're putting on yourself. It's so torturous when you think that you've really found it, achieved it, made it only to realise: that isn't exactly what you wanted. It still misses points #21 and #46.

So I implore all of you: craft your ideals. Not like a 3rd grader trying to make something out of scraps of paper, but like an artisan delicately shaping and modelling the clay on the potter's wheel.
