the untold abyss
Thursday 2 March 2017

We huddled together as a tightly knit family at backstage, while hearing the loud music booming out of the speakers just feet away on the main stage.

"This is the final time we will be performing together," someone whispered.

We nodded in agreement.

The mood was heavy and solemn, and the piano keys echoing throughout the auditorium didn't help either. Soon enough tears were streaming down our cheeks, and the guy standing beside me was sobbing so hard he couldn't stand.

It was the final time that I'd be standing on stage and performing this piece with everyone present. The year fours and the year threes. The final year students who still came back to perform.

"Remember what I said just now? If you love something so much, you have to learn to let it go," our captain spoke.

My heart felt like it was properly wrung and droplets of tears just fell. A hand squeezed my shoulder encouragingly and I squeezed back. That was the support that we had for each other - the bond that was built only in a mere three months, but it was a strong bond.

"... Ohmelette!"

Everyone's hands reached into the center and while smiling as brightly as we could, we echoed, "Ohmelette!"
